There are 2,558,874 licensed registered nurses in USA. Approximately 2,433,000 RNs are female; 95.1 % of the total nurses. 9% of all RNs are under the age of 30 and nearly 30% are over the age of 50. [Source: US Labor Census projections 2007].

The American Hospital Association estimates that there were over 100,000 vacant hospital nursing positions in the USA last year. The Federal Bureau of Health Professions projects the demand for RN's registered nurses, will continue to grow thru 2018.

The nationwide shortage of nurses has put upward pressure on nursing salaries and has increased the demand for experienced nurses.

A little more than 30 states are currently facing a nursing shortage. That number is expected to rise to 44 states by 2020, according to the Health Resources and Services Administration 2002 survey.

One million new and replacement nurses will be needed by 2012, which places registered nursing as the leader in job growth, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Approximately 126,000 nurses are currently needed to fill hospital job vacancies, according to American Hospital Association.

Earnings Stats (2006)

  • Median: $57,280
  • Middle 50 percent earned between $47,710 and $69,850.
  • The lowest 10 percent earned less than $40,250.
  • The highest 10 percent earned more than $83,440.
